Facilitating a Principal Endorsement Network
A group of primary principals wanted an external facilitator for the process of endorsing their professional practice certificates. In their extremely busy and often stressful role, attending to this obligation was just another pressure. They needed something simple but robust, aligned with other leadership priorities, and delivered by an experienced facilitator with senior school leadership experience. The Ahead Associates model was a good fit. The self-selected group meets off-site once per term for a two-hour session. The session is designed and facilitated to include elements of:
- Professional networking with trusted colleagues
- Professional knowledge: consideration of current or emerging leadership issues in education – researched by the facilitator according to relevance and preferences of the group
- Peer group mentoring of the individual annual Professional Growth Cycle of each principal – signed off by an endorser colleague in the last session of the year.
These principals appreciated such a ‘hassle-free’ approach to the process. It allows them to connect meaningfully with their professional colleagues while ensuring they meet the endorsement requirements of the Teaching Council.
Individual Principal Mentoring
A principal of a neighbourhood high school was finding her leadership role exciting and rewarding, but also demanding and lonely. A principal is on their own when it comes shouldering responsibility.
While she had a positive relationship with the Board Chair, and networked with several other principals, she was looking for professional support that was separate from the day-to-day engagement with colleagues.
Now, mentoring has become part of this principal's problem-solving and decision-making process, and she also links the mentoring conversations to her own professional growth cycle reflections.
Senior Leadership Workshops
Primary School Leadership Refresh
A very experienced primary school principal wanted to 'refresh' the leadership practice of his senior leadership team. The school was facing challenges as the size and demographics of the local community were changing rapidly, and the leadership structure was under pressure.
An Ahead Associates consultant co-designed with the principal a senior leadership workshop that combined leadership theory with the practical reality of professional growth cycles for teachers. The aim was to blend leadership 'good practice' into the roles of these senior leaders, and align this with shared leadership focussed professional growth cycles for the whole team.
The consultant provided additional workshops over the year to support and embed these shifts in practice.
Secondary School Team Building
A newly appointed secondary principal wanted her new leadership team to reflect on the elements of a 'high performing' leadership team. The team needed to identify how they would ensure effective working relationships and achieve the strategic priorities for the school.
An Ahead Associates consultant provided a workshop to clarify some agreed team values and behaviors. The process freed the principal to focus on participating in the discussion, and ensured that this was a truly collaborative team building exercise.
This approach helped establish a strong foundation for the new leadership team to work effectively together toward the school's strategic goals.
Other Senior Leadership Support
Deputy Principal Development Programme
A group of principal colleagues believed their Deputy Principals should access some context specific leadership development opportunities. This would acknowledge and support their emerging leaders.
Ahead Associates provided a Peer Group Mentoring (PGM) programme for their nominated senior leaders, like the principals' PEN programme. Its establishment has encouraged some participants to pursue additional post graduate study, and strengthened the professionally focused networking of the Deputy Principals involved.
The benefits have been clear for the individuals, the schools and the wider education community.
Individual Leadership Mentoring
A principal sought a mentor for one of his senior leaders. His Deputy was new to the school and struggling to find his own leadership style in the new setting.
Individual Leadership Mentoring with an Ahead Associates consultant provided him with the opportunity for some honest reflection on his leadership, and the development of strategies to strengthen this in a new school environment.
This personalized approach helped the Deputy Principal gain confidence and develop an effective leadership approach tailored to the school's unique context and needs.
